On 25 and 26 September 2018, thanks to the Nature and Landscape Protection Agency of the Czech Republic (AOPK ČR), members of the LIFE.VISTULA.PL project team gained new experience in the field of bird protection.

A two-day visit to Ostrava, the capital of the Silesian-Moravian Region and the seat of the Regional Board of the CHKO Poodří was an opportunity to exchange experiences with the Agency’s employees and visit the Skučák and Bartošovický luh nature reserves, where active conservation tasks are carried out, aimed at the protection of water-marsh birds and their habitat.

Among the tasks carried out by Czech naturalists there were, among others, works securing the breeding habitats of protected birds located on the islands. The protection of bird nesting habitats prior to their degradation is one of the most important tasks of the LIFE.VISTULA.PL project, hence the first point of the program was a visit to the Skučák nature reserve in Rychwald. At the breeding pond of the same name, already 13 years ago, the employees of the CHKO Poodří management have taken effective action, thanks to which their broods are held here, among others : dart, scumbag, black-headed gull, common tern. An interesting fact of the first day of the visit was a visit to the private Kozmické ptačí louky nature reserve, where on 25 hectares a flood plain with meadow and wet meadows was created.

The reserve is a place of existence for many species of birds, such as, for example, the white-tailed eagle, lapwing, seals, snakes, cranes, cyranas, as well as mammals, amphibians and butterflies.
The second day of the trip initiated the meeting at the headquarters of the Regional Board of the CHKO Poodří AOPK ČR, during which the project coordinator and specialists of ornithologists presented in detail the objectives planned to be carried out, and shared their experiences of research on protected species of birds. The visit was completed by a field trip to the Bartošovický luh nature reserve, which is part of wetlands of international importance under the Convention on Wetlands, which have international significance mainly as biotopes of waterfowl Among the tasks implemented by Czech naturalists, there were works to protect the breeding habitats of protected birds located on the islands.
