Counting the nests of the night heron is an annual ritual of Upper Silesian ornithologists. The population of this species in the southern part of the Silesian Voivodeship and western Lesser Poland has been monitored for 30 years. It is not a simple and easy task. It is necessary to use an appropriate methodology developed after many years of experience. Due to the safety of night herons and other species nesting on the same island, counting is carried out after the birds leave the breeding colony.
